Pego
Village
Pego is a municipality and town of the Comunitat Valenciana, in the north-east of Alicante, on the border with Valencia, in the comarca of the Marina Alta, next to the Marjal de Pego-Oliva. Together with Adsubia it forms the Valle de Pego, a large depression surrounded by mountains — the Xillibre, at 729 metres, is the highest — which opens eastward onto an area of albufera and marshland. The valley has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic. Occupied by Muslims around the year 726, it was an agricultural enclave of the taifa of Dénia until James I conquered the valley and its castle, today called de Ambra, in 1244. After a Mudejar rebellion was put down, the Infante Peter resettled the territory with Catalan farmers and founded the town in the late 13th century, on the Andalusi alquería of Uixola. It has 10,791 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Pego-Oliva wetland
Nature
The Marjal de Pego-Oliva Natural Park protects a 1,255-hectare wetland divided between the municipalities of Pego, in the comarca of La Marina Alta, and Oliva, in La Safor, declared a natural park in 1994. It stretches between the Racons and Bullent rivers, next to a dune system south of the Serpis river, and combines marshland and rice fields crossed by a network of old irrigation channels. Its origin is due to the silting-up of an old bay, which first became a lagoon and then, gradually, the present-day marsh, a stretch of reed beds with numerous pools of clean water.

Mountain range near Pego, with excellent conditions for hiking and cycle touring, in the comarca of La Marina Alta. Together with the sierra de Mostalla, it frames the valley of Pego in a horseshoe shape, and both form karstic aquifers that supply water to the surrounding vega.
Moros y Cristianos de Pego
Activity
Fair and Moors and Christians festivities of Pego (Alicante), held the last weekend of June in honor of the town's patron, the Santísimo Ecce Homo, whose feast falls on the Wednesday following the last Sunday of the month. The preceding weekend brings the traditional Moors and Christians parades, with thirteen filaes, seven Christian and six Moorish, along with a solemn procession in which representatives of various festivals, brotherhoods and fallas take part. The tradition was reestablished in 1969, and the festivities have been declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial (an official tourism distinction at provincial level).

Rice and the channelling of the marsh
Historical milestone
The wetland that occupies the plain was channelled from the eighteenth century with irrigation channels and drainage ditches so that rice could be planted, an activity that sustained the local economy for two hundred years. In 1994 the marsh was declared a natural park and the rice-growing area was regulated.
