What to see and do in Pedreguer

Pedreguer
Village
Pedreguer is a municipality in La Marina Alta, in the northeast of the province of Alicante and close to the Mediterranean coast, where the valley of the Girona river cuts through the foothills of the Valencian pre-Betic system. It has close to 8,850 inhabitants. Its earliest settlers date back to the Neolithic, 5,000 years ago, according to remains found in the Randero cave, later occupied by the Contestani Iberians; burials from Roman times survive in the area known as Fossarets. It is riurau country, the open-arched porches raised by the hundreds between the 18th and 19th centuries beside country houses to gather in the grapes set out to dry whenever rain threatened, at a time when muscat raisins were the comarca's great export.
The riuraus, raisin-drying architecture
Historical milestone
The riuraus are open-arched porches built next to the country houses of Pedreguer to gather in the grapes laid out to dry whenever rain threatened. Hundreds of them were built between the 18th and 19th centuries, when muscatel raisins were the comarca's great export.
