Ondara
Village
Ondara is a municipality in the Alicante comarca of La Marina Alta, with a population of more than seven thousand inhabitants, situated beside the Girona river, near the coast. The earliest traces of settlement date back to the Palaeolithic and Eneolithic, in the caves of the Sierra de Segaria, which also housed an Iberian settlement; its name may come from the Iberian word ondar, 'sandy expanse'. The village and its castle, of Muslim origin, were temporarily occupied by El Cid in 1089, and in 1244 James I incorporated it into the Kingdom of Valencia. In the early 16th century it was the scene of the War of the Germanías. At Christmas and for the patronal festivities the comarca prepares pastissets de moniato, little cakes of oil-and-spirit dough filled with sweet potato roasted with sugar and cinnamon.
