What to see and do in Estella-Lizarra

Estella-Lizarra
Village
The capital of the comarca, with 14,317 inhabitants, founded around 1090 by Sancho Ramírez as a Frankish borough next to the Vascon hamlet of Lizarra. Known as 'the Toledo of the North' for its heritage, it was a Carlist stronghold in the 19th-century wars and holds Romanesque jewels such as San Pedro de la Rúa and the Palacio de los Reyes de Navarra.
El fuero de Estella de 1090
Historical milestone
Around 1090 King Sancho Ramírez granted the new borough of San Pedro de la Rúa a charter modeled on that of Jaca, which guaranteed settlers of Frankish origin ownership of their property and freedom of trade. The privilege spurred the establishment of an active colony of merchants and craftsmen and in turn served as a model for other charters in the north of the peninsula, including that of San Sebastián.
La iglesia de San Pedro de la Rúa
Monument
Documented as a parish since 1174, this Romanesque-Gothic church stands atop a monumental staircase. Its cloister, from around 1170 and preserved in only two of its original four galleries after the neighboring Zalatambor castle was blown up in 1572, holds one of the richest collections of historiated capitals in Navarrese Romanesque art. It was declared a monumento histórico-artístico ('historic-artistic monument', Spain's heritage protection category used between 1931 and 1985) in 1931 and forms part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
El Palacio de los Reyes de Navarra
Monument
A 12th-century building considered, together with the hórreo (granary) of Iracheta, one of only two surviving examples of Romanesque civil architecture in Navarre. Despite its popular name there is no documentary evidence that the kings actually lived there; notable is its capital depicting the legendary combat between Roldán and Ferragut, signed by the sculptor Martinus de Logroño. Since 1991 it has housed the Museo Gustavo de Maeztu.
El pogromo de la judería de Estella de 1328
Historical milestone
Estella's prosperous Jewish community, known as the Elgacena, suffered a violent assault by its Christian neighbors in 1328 that caused numerous victims, one of the most serious episodes of anti-Jewish persecution in medieval Navarre.
La Denominación de Origen Navarra, subzona Tierra Estella
Food and drink
With winemaking antecedents dating back to the 1st century, the present-day Denominación de Origen Navarra was established in 1932 and published its first regulations in 1967. It recognizes five subzones, among them Tierra Estella, which brings together 26 municipalities of the comarca and just over 1,200 hectares of vineyard following the replanting after the 19th-century phylloxera outbreak.
