What to see and do in Ayegui/Aiegi

Ayegui
Village
A municipality of 2,589 inhabitants, officially Ayegui/Aiegi, which includes the settlement of Irache, home to the historic monastery of the same name with its wine fountain beside the Camino de Santiago. It belonged to the mancomunidad of Montejurra and celebrates its patronal festivities at the end of August.
El monasterio de Santa María la Real de Irache
Monument
A monastery of uncertain origin, already documented in 958 and run by the Order of Saint Benedict, which became one of the most influential on the Camino de Santiago and maintained Navarre's first pilgrims' hospital. Between 1569 and 1824 it functioned as a university, with five faculties; today it preserves a 12th-century Romanesque church, a Plateresque cloister and a Herrerian tower.
La fuente del vino de Irache
Curiosity
Next to the Irache winery, right on the Camino de Santiago, an old stone trough dispenses water and wine free of charge to pilgrims through two separate spouts, a custom kept up by the winery next to the monastery.
