Abárzuza
Village
A municipality of 510 inhabitants situated between the Sierra de Urbasa-Andía and the Valle de Yerri. Four kilometers away stands the Cistercian monastery of Iranzu. Within its boundaries the Battle of Abárzuza was fought in 1874, the most important of the Third Carlist War.
El monasterio de Santa María la Real de Iranzu
Monument
A Cistercian monastery founded in 1176 after these lands were donated by the bishop of Pamplona, Pedro de París, to his brother Nicolás, on the site of an earlier Benedictine priory. It came to hold property in more than a hundred and twenty settlements; seized in the disentailment of 1839, it lay in ruins until its restoration began in 1942 under the Institución Príncipe de Viana. Since 1993 it has been inhabited by Theatine fathers, who maintain a seminary there.

Historical milestone
Between 25 and 27 June 1874, in the area of Monte Muro near Abárzuza, the largest engagement of the Third Carlist War was fought. Although they outnumbered the Carlists two to one, the Republican troops were defeated, and their general, Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha, Marqués del Duero, died from a shot received on the afternoon of the 27th.
