Around 1090 King Sancho Ramírez granted the new borough of San Pedro de la Rúa a charter modeled on that of Jaca, which guaranteed settlers of Frankish origin ownership of their property and freedom of trade. The privilege spurred the establishment of an active colony of merchants and craftsmen and in turn served as a model for other charters in the north of the peninsula, including that of San Sebastián.
