With winemaking antecedents dating back to the 1st century, the present-day Denominación de Origen Navarra was established in 1932 and published its first regulations in 1967. It recognizes five subzones, among them Tierra Estella, which brings together 26 municipalities of the comarca and just over 1,200 hectares of vineyard following the replanting after the 19th-century phylloxera outbreak.
