What to see and do in Burgui/Burgi

Burgui/Burgi
Village
Burgui/Burgi sits at the southern entrance to the Roncal valley, near the confluence of the Biniés river with the Esca. Its border position gave it military importance in the Middle Ages, with a castle, now vanished, whose memory is preserved by the hermitage built on its former site. Local tradition, without linguistic support, derives the name from the initials of the valley's villages.
Puente medieval de Burgui
Monument
A multi-span stone bridge that spans the Esca river in Burgui, the main historic access to the Roncal valley from the south and a passage point for the logs floated down by the almadieros (log-raft drivers).
Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Castillo, Burgui
Monument
Built on the site of the old medieval castle of Burgui, which defended the southern entrance to the Roncal valley.
Iglesia de San Pedro, Burgui
Monument
It preserves an organ from the monastery of Leyre, moved to the parish of Burgui following the disentailment (desamortización).
Foz de Burgui
Nature
A narrow gorge carved by the Esca river as it passes through Burgui, in mountainous terrain between 900 and 1,000 m altitude, not far from the better-known Foz de Arbayún.
Museo de la Almadía y Día de la Almadía, Burgui
Activity
The Museo de la Almadía (Log-Raft Museum) of Burgui recalls the trade of the almadieros, who tied together logs cut in the Selva de Irati and the mountains of the valley to form rafts -almadías- to float them down the Esca, Aragón, and Ebro rivers as far as Zaragoza and Tortosa. Every April, the Día de la Almadía (Log-Raft Day) revives that tradition with a public log-raft descent down the river.
