What to see and do in Sigüés

Sigüés
Village
Sigüés is a municipality in the comarca of La Jacetania, in the province of Zaragoza, situated at 521 metres of altitude next to the Yesa reservoir, which flooded a large part of its lands and caused the disappearance of the villages of Tiermas and Escó, incorporated into its municipal area in 1970. On the banks of the Esca river, three routes of the Camino de Santiago passed through Sigüés, which accordingly had a pilgrims' hospital dedicated to Santa Ana, and its town centre is declared a site of interest of the Camino de Santiago. It was also the natural outlet of the Valle de Roncal and the crossing point of the log rafters (almadieros) who floated timber down the Esca river, recalled by a monument in the centre of the village. Its name, recorded as Sios as early as 1016, probably derives from Seiossu, “estate of a certain Seius.”

The Yesa reservoir and the end of Tiermas and Escó
Historical milestone
The closing of the reservoir on the river Aragón flooded between 1959 and 1960 the best lands of the municipality and forced the abandonment of Tiermas, with its thermal baths that reappear when the water drops, and of Escó, left empty high on its slope.
