What to see and do in Sevilla la Nueva

Sevilla la Nueva
Village
Sevilla la Nueva is a town in the Comarca Sur of the Community of Madrid, in the Guadarrama river basin between Navalcarnero and Brunete, about 38 kilometres from the capital. It has about 9,800 inhabitants. Its founding may date from the 12th century, the work of residents of Sevilleja de la Jara, in Toledo, and it was part of the Sexmo de Casarrubios until 1833. It formed its own first town council on 23 December 1544 despite the fierce opposition of the count of Chinchón and his town of Brunete, which gave rise to long lawsuits resolved ten years later with a second founding that fixed the plot for the church and distributed land among the settlers. Until 1916 the municipality was also called Sevilleja. It preserves the Palacio de Baena or Casa Grande, a 17th-century Herrerian building, and the parish church of Santiago.
Palace of Baena de Sevilla la Nueva
Monument
A 17th-century mansion of austere Herrerian lines that locals have always known as the Casa Grande; recovered by the municipality, it is now the home of the cultural centre and the main historic building in the town.
Dehesa Boyal of Sevilla la Nueva
Nature
A municipal estate in the far north-west of the district where holm oak woodland mixes with pines and ash trees and black vultures fly overhead; water snakes and terrapins live in its two waterlogged areas, and the San Isidro pilgrimage festival is held there.
Arboretum Trail of Sevilla la Nueva
Activity
A 4.4-kilometre walking route linking the town with the Dehesa Boyal and letting you cross the municipal holm oak wood on foot; the council waymarks it along with other local routes through the district.
The first council of Sevilla la Nueva
Historical milestone
The residents constituted their first town council and elected mayors of their own. The lawsuits with the Count of Chinchón and with Brunete forced them to redo the distribution of lots and to repeat the election on 14 April 1554.
