Chapinería
Village
Chapinería is a village in the Sierra Oeste of Madrid with about 2,700 inhabitants, situated 50 kilometres from the capital and built on outcrops of berroqueño granite that surface even in the paving of some streets. On its southern edge open the Cárcavas del Río Perales, formations of strong erosion protected by Madrid's forestry legislation, and much of its territory is covered by a well-preserved holm oak wood that serves as habitat for the Spanish imperial eagle, the golden eagle and the black vulture, which is why the Community of Madrid installed here the Centro de Educación Ambiental Casa del Águila. An independent town since 1630, it preserves the church of the Inmaculada Concepción, from the 17th century, and El Bombo, an 18th-century shelter for walkers. It is the birthplace of Eloy Gonzalo, the hero of Cascorro.
The Bombo of Chapinería
Monument
A shelter for travellers on a square plan with a vault of brick and stone, built around 1750 beside the royal road from Madrid to San Martín de Valdeiglesias to give shelter to the poor and to travellers; it is already mentioned in the Lorenzana Reports of 1788.
Gullies of the Perales River
Nature
Erosion gullies carved along some two kilometres of the Perales riverbed, listed as a natural area of interest under the Madrid Forestry Act of 1995 for their geomorphological and wildlife value.
The game of the Sierra Oeste
Food and drink
The hills and holm oak woods of the district have bred hares, rabbits and partridges in abundance, the basis of the small-game stews that accompany the cereals and pulses of the dry farmland in the traditional cooking of the comarca.
