What to see and do in Navalagamella

Navalagamella
Village
Navalagamella is a village of about 3,200 inhabitants situated at 753 metres in the Sierra Oeste of Madrid. Its name mixes the pre-Roman naba, flat land, with gamella, stone trough, referring to the numerous carved basins in the territory; it has been written this way since the Libro de la Montería of Alfonso XI, around 1350. It was founded during the Reconquista by the Concejo de Segovia, still recalled by an aqueduct on its coat of arms. On the banks of the Perales river a group of five flour mills is preserved, among them the Molino Alto and the Molino Serrano, now linked by hiking routes, and the medieval Pasadero bridge, with a single arch. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella presides over the village, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), begun in the 15th century.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella
Monument
A parish church begun in the 15th century and finished in the 16th, with a polygonal apse and ribbed vaults; of the seven hermitages the village once had, only those of San José, the Cristo de la Sangre and San Miguel Arcángel survive.

Curiosity
The Ensenada Cadastre recorded six pot mills and a fulling mill here; beside the Perales five flour mills can still be identified, the Alto, the Hondilla, the Serrano, the mill of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial and the Navacerrada mill.
