What to see and do in Colmenar del Arroyo

Colmenar del Arroyo
Village
Colmenar del Arroyo is a mountain hamlet of Madrid with about 2,000 inhabitants, set at 687 metres above sea level, in the old sexmo of Casarrubios de la Tierra de Segovia. Philip IV granted it the privilege of town status on 19 December 1626, when it still had barely 328 inhabitants in the mid-19th century, as recorded in the Diccionario de Pascual Madoz. The stream that gives the village its name runs through the settlement, in a territory of holm oak woods and dehesas beside the Perales valley, which borders Robledo de Chavela, Navalagamella and Navas del Rey, among other municipalities.
Church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora de Colmenar del Arroyo
Monument
A Renaissance church built between 1589 and 1615 that presides over the Plaza Mayor, traditionally attributed to Juan de Herrera because of its kinship with the design of El Escorial; it is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Hermitage of San Vicente Mártir
Monument
Of the hermitage built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the promontory of the Cerrillo de San Gregorio, only its bell gable is still standing, now built into the wall enclosing the municipal cemetery of Colmenar del Arroyo.
Trail of los Molinos de Colmenar del Arroyo
Activity
A path of some 3.5 kilometres linking the municipality's water heritage: the mill races, the washing place, the drinking trough, the waterwheel and the Caño bridge, a record of the part water played in the village's rural economy.
Blockhaus 13
Curiosity
A circular, concentric blockhouse built between late 1938 and early 1939 by the second company of sapper battalion number 7; of the twenty-two bunkers planned to that design, this was the only one ever finished.
