What to see and do in Robledillo de la Jara

Robledillo de la Jara
Village
Robledillo de la Jara is a municipality in the north of the Community of Madrid, in the Lozoya valley, in the Sierra Norte, between the El Villar and El Atazar reservoirs, with its 118 residents. Its name alludes to the abundance of oaks and rockroses (jaras) on its hills; "de la Jara" was added to distinguish it from other Robledillos, in connection with the former Quarto de la Xara of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Buitrago, to which it belonged from the resettlement following the conquest by Alfonso VI in 1083. The Marquis of Santillana mentions it in one of his 15th-century Serranillas. The El Villar dam, built between 1869 and 1882, was the first of the arch-gravity type in Europe; also notable are the neo-Mudéjar church of 1893 and an ethnographic museum.
Dam of El Villar
Monument
Begun in 1869 to a design by the engineers Elzeario Boix and José Morer and completed in 1882, it reached 50 metres in height and was the first curved-plan gravity dam built in Europe; it remains the oldest dam still in service of the Canal de Isabel II.
