What to see and do in Cervera de Buitrago

Cervera de Buitrago
Village
Cervera de Buitrago is a village in the Community of Madrid, in the Sierra Norte, now oriented towards the El Atazar reservoir, having traded its old farming economy for water sports: sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. With barely 165 inhabitants, it formed part of the lordship of Buitrago until the abolition of the seigneurial system in the early 19th century. Its written history is linked to Miguel Díaz Peñacorba, a native of Buitrago, who took part in the colonisation of the territory of present-day El Salvador and returned to Spain in 1548 to settle in Cervera after marrying a local woman. On his death in 1563 he asked to be buried at San Antonio de La Cabrera, but his heirs moved his remains, and those of his wife, to the church of Santa María de Cervera de Buitrago, where they still rest.
