What to see and do in Navafría

Navafría
Village
Navafría is a town of about 282 inhabitants in the Community of Town and Land of Pedraza, in Segovia, at 1,194 metres above sea level at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, on the western slope of the Montes Carpetanos; it is famous for its pine forest and the El Chorro waterfall, where the Cega river rises. This river used to power the martinete forges where copper cauldrons were hammered, and one of them is preserved, turned into a museum, next to the natural pool that in summer draws numerous bathers. The population lives chiefly from livestock farming, work in the pine forest and construction, and celebrates its main festivity on 10 August, San Lorenzo. Around the Pozo Verde the legend is told of two young lovers who took their own lives in the face of their families' opposition.
The Chorro waterfall of Navafría
Nature
On the north-western slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Chorro stream, a tributary of the Cega river, plunges down a straight, evenly wide course reminiscent of a slide, forming a 20-metre-high waterfall at 1,320 metres above sea level; it is the heart of a heavily used recreational area in the municipality of Navafría (Segovia). The upper part can be reached by a side staircase, and below the fall there is a small pool where the water rests before continuing on its way. A kilometre away, the El Chorro recreational park has tables, a restaurant and parking, and a path leads to the waterfall through a lush forest of Scots pine, fern and moss.
The source of the Cega river
Nature
The Cega rises on the northern slope of the sierra de Guadarrama, near the Lozoya pass, on the watershed between the Duero and Tajo basins. Its source lies in the spring known as the fuente del Mojón, in the municipality of Navafría, beneath the Peña del Cuervo, which rises above 2,100 metres and is the highest point in the municipality. Over 149 kilometres, the river crosses the provinces of Segovia and Valladolid before flowing into the Duero, and after rising it irrigates the whole of the Tierra de Pinares. In the village itself, its waters have always been used for drinking and for irrigating orchards and meadows, and they once drove old mills and forge hammers (martinetes), one of which is preserved as an anthropological museum.
The copper hammer mills
Curiosity
On the banks of the river worked martinetes, water-driven hammers that beat copper to make cauldrons and utensils; one of them is preserved and has become an anthropological museum of the trade.
The legend of the Green Well
Curiosity
Within the recreational area of the Chorro opens a pool of greenish water to which oral tradition attaches the tragic story of two young lovers; the spot keeps the name and the legend among the locals.
Santa Isabel and San Lorenzo
Activity
The municipality, of 282 inhabitants, celebrates two main festivals: Santa Isabel on 2 July and San Lorenzo on 10 August, in the middle of the mountain summer, when the residents tied to the pinewood and to stock raising return to the village.
