What to see and do in Canencia

Canencia
Village
Canencia is a village of around 475 residents at the foot of the pass that bears its name, at 1,150 metres, in the Valle Alto del Lozoya, within the Sierra Norte of Madrid. Its municipal area, watered by the Canencia stream, a tributary of the Lozoya, alternates meadows and pastures with woods of oak and holly, including a notable birch grove. The village arose from the Christian resettlement of the community of town and land of Segovia after the conquest of the area by Alfonso VI at the end of the 11th century; some link its name to old royal kennels, hence the dog on its coat of arms. Only in 1833 did it stop depending on Segovia to become part of Madrid. It preserves the Gothic church of Santa María del Castillo, from the 15th century, with a pulpit of Mudéjar plasterwork, and three medieval bridges.

Nature
Beside the Canencia pass, at 1,524 metres, the Sestil del Maíllo stream waters a wood of a kind rarely seen in Madrid, where birches mingle with oaks, hollies and yews; the ecological path that runs through it passes the Mojonavalle waterfall.
