Valdemanco
Village
Valdemanco is a village of about 1,097 inhabitants in the Community of Madrid, located at 1,140 metres above sea level in a small valley southwest of the Cerros de La Cabrera, in the easternmost part of the sierra de Guadarrama. Its municipal area, very rugged, spans a difference in elevation of almost a thousand metres, from below 900 metres up to the 1,830 metres of Peña Negra, and is crossed by the Albalá stream, a tributary of the Guadalix and, through it, of the Jarama; the vegetation changes with altitude, from mountain broom (piorno) on the peaks to pine woods and oak groves on the lower slopes. The area was resettled during the Reconquista at the expense of the Community of Segovia, first forming part of Bustarviejo. Its granite quarries continue to shape the local economy, and it separated from that municipality in 1840.
