What to see and do in Fuente el Saz de Jarama

Fuente el Saz de Jarama
Village
Fuente el Saz de Jarama is a village in the Community of Madrid, situated beside the River Jarama, with a population of about 7,400 inhabitants known as fonsarinos or fontesacinos; it now functions as a dormitory town for the capital, although it also preserves an agricultural fabric. Its church of San Pedro Apóstol, begun in the 13th century but rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries, is a large three-nave temple whose baroque altarpiece holds the canvas of the martyrdom of the saint, a work by Francisco Rizi. The village also venerates the Virgen de Ciguiñuela, whose hermitage recalls the legend of shepherds who, following storks that always alighted in the same place, found her image buried there; on 6 September the Entrada de la Virgen is celebrated.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Fuente el Saz
Monument
A temple from the second half of the 16th century attributed to Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, belonging to the group of Castilian hall churches, whose construction dates back to the 16th century and was finished around the beginning of the 17th. It has three naves — north, central and south, with three, four and four bays respectively — and a square tower topped by a Herrerian spire. Although the declaration decree names it by mistake as “San Pedro Mártir”, it is dedicated to San Pedro Apóstol. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 March 2012, published in the Boletín Oficial de la Comunidad de Madrid on the 16th of that month.
Procession of the Virgen de la Cigüeñuela
Activity
The patron saint festivities are held from 5 to 10 September and their main day is the 6th, when the Virgen de la Cigüeñuela leaves her hermitage for the church of San Pedro among bonfires that families light to light her way.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Ciguiñuela
Monument
A sanctuary that guards the image which, according to local tradition, some shepherds found after noticing that the storks always settled on the same spot; from that come the dedication and the name by which the locals know it.
The Martyrdom of Saint Peter by Francisco Rizi
Curiosity
A canvas by the court painter Francisco Rizi that presides over the baroque altarpiece of the church of San Pedro Apóstol, a building begun in the 13th century and rebuilt between the 16th and 17th; it is the finest work of art in the municipality.
