What to see and do in Daganzo de Arriba

Daganzo de Arriba
Village
Daganzo de Arriba is a town of about 10,700 inhabitants whose name, of pre-Roman origin, may go back to the Celtiberian tribe of the Dagencium, mentioned in a funerary inscription found in the neighbouring Villamanta; in the 16th century there also existed, a little further south, a second town called Daganzuelo, renamed in 1586 as Daganzo de Abajo, which disappeared in the 19th century, at which point the northern village adopted the name Daganzo de Arriba. Cervantes immortalised the locality in the entremés La elección de los alcaldes de Daganzo, and it still preserves the Mudejar church of la Asunción and the fountain of the Cuatro Caños, documented in the 16th and 17th centuries. A kilometre from the town centre, the María Marzol forest park occupies the site where a Visigothic necropolis was found.
Church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora de Daganzo
Monument
Mudéjar masonry church with a tower of four brick sections, restored in 2015. It holds a silver monstrance from Daganzo de Abajo, the municipality's twin settlement, which disappeared in the 19th century.
The election of the mayors of Daganzo
Curiosity
Miguel de Cervantes set one of his interludes in this town, a satire about some illiterate candidates for the mayor's staff of office. In 2018 the municipality dedicated the Plaza Cervantes to him, in memory of that literary mention.
Spring of los Cuatro Caños de Daganzo
Monument
A hallmark of the municipality, with origins placed between the 16th and 17th centuries and a restoration completed in 2015; for centuries it supplied a community whose Mudejar church still keeps the monstrance of the vanished Daganzo de Abajo.
Film studios of Daganzo
Curiosity
In the 1970s and 1980s the sound stages of Madrid 70 and Estudios Daganzo turned these fields into a setting for spaghetti westerns and fantasy cinema, with shoots such as "Captain Apache" and "Horror Express".
Cervantes publishes the interlude of the mayors
Historical milestone
«La elección de los alcaldes de Daganzo» appeared in the writer's volume of eight comedies and eight interludes. It satirises candidates who boast of praying, shooting a bow or tasting wines, and the village has performed it every year since 2012.
