What to see and do in San Agustín del Guadalix

San Agustín del Guadalix
Village
San Agustín del Guadalix is a municipality of about 13,800 inhabitants located in the north of the Community of Madrid, next to the A-1 motorway, in the transition zone between the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Tagus depression. It is part of the Northern Metropolitan Area of Madrid, together with Alcobendas, Algete, Cobeña, Colmenar Viejo, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Tres Cantos, an area characterised by its proximity to the capital and its economic dynamism. The río Guadalix, a tributary of the Jarama, crosses it from north to south, creating along its course the waterfalls of the Charco del Hervidero. Next to the 16th-century church passes the Retuerta aqueduct, inaugurated by Isabella II in 1858.
Aqueduct of la Retuerta
Monument
At 170 metres long and 28 high, it is the most striking work among the five channels of the Canal de Isabel II that cross the municipal district. It formed part of the water supply system to Madrid inaugurated by Queen Isabella II in 1858.
Dehesa of Moncalvillo
Nature
Woodland of public utility covering 1,348 hectares of Mediterranean holm oak and juniper at the foot of the Cerro de San Pedro. It has belonged to the town council since 1459, when the Mendoza family ceded it on condition that it never be divided or sold, and today it is part of Natura 2000.
Waterfalls of the Charco del Hervidero
Nature
The river Guadalix drops here over two waterfalls set in a gorge of willows, alders and poplars. It is reached in about five kilometres from the Laguna de los Patos recreation area, along wooden walkways that cross the riverbed several times.
Lagoon of los Patos
Nature
A wetland in the district of San Agustín supporting a varied community of water birds and amphibians, and serving as a damp counterpoint to the nearby Moncalvillo pasture, public utility woodland number 132, kept up by grazing.
The town charter of San Agustín
Historical milestone
Joanna I granted the place, in the early 16th century, the title of town with the right to gallows, pillory, stocks, chain and whip, the insignia that symbolized its own jurisdiction and justice. The territory had been resettled after the area's conquest by Alfonso VI.
