What to see and do in Fresno de Torote

Fresno de Torote
Village
Fresno de Torote is a municipality of about 2,500 inhabitants in the Community of Madrid, in the Henares corridor, crossed by the River Torote and several tributary streams. It was founded in the 15th century by the first Marquis of Santillana to house his day labourers, and in the 16th century it became the lordship of the Princess of Éboli; in the 20th century it was frequented by Juan de Borbón, fond of hunting days, who used to hunt there invited by the Marquis Jaime Álvarez de las Asturias. In the sacristy of the church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, in the year 2000, the coffin appeared containing the remains of Juan Hurtado de Mendoza y Luján, second lord of Torote. In the mid-19th century the neighbouring, previously independent, Serracines was annexed, and today almost the entire population lives in that settlement.

Monument
In this parish church the coffin of Juan Hurtado de Mendoza y Luján, second lord of Torote, appeared in the year 2000, a find that confirmed the church's link with the lineage that founded the village in the 15th century.

Nature
The Torote and its tributary streams, such as the Raposera and the Valdeolmos, cross a district that ranges between 680 and 815 metres in altitude and trace the hollows that separate old Fresno from the settlement of Serracines.

Curiosity
The settlement that gives the municipality its name is uninhabited today and the seat of local government has passed to Serracines, formerly its hamlet; of old Fresno there remain the church of San Esteban, of Mudejar and Renaissance construction, and the hermitage of the Virgen del Espino beside the River Torote.
