What to see and do in Camarma de Esteruelas

Camarma de Esteruelas
Village
Camarma de Esteruelas is a locality of about 8,300 inhabitants situated in the farmland of the Henares, in the east of the Community of Madrid, watered by the Camarmilla stream, a tributary of the Henares, which crosses the territory from north to south through wheat and barley fields. The settlement sits in the valley where this stream meets that of Valdegatos. It forms the first stage of the Camino de Santiago Complutense, which sets out from the cathedral of Alcalá de Henares, whose proximity is reflected in streets with Cervantine names such as Dulcinea, Rocinante or Toboso. Its church of San Pedro Apóstol, of Mudejar and Renaissance construction with restored frescoes, was begun around the 13th century.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Camarma
Monument
The church of San Pedro Apóstol, in Camarma de Esteruelas, retains from its original 13th-century fabric the semicircular apse and the brick pre-apse, in mudéjar style. In the mid-16th century the rest of the temple was rebuilt, with a three-nave plan and a wooden roof over the naves added in the early modern period; the masonry-and-brick tower was raised by Juan de Ballesteros. In the apse survive remains of a painting of a Pantocrator from the late 14th century, with Romanesque and Gothic features, one of the most interesting sets of mural painting in the Community of Madrid. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), monument category, by decree of 30 May 1997, and belongs to the diocese of Alcalá de Henares.

Nature
The municipal district lies within this special protection area for birds, 33,092 hectares declared in 1992 that host the best great bustard population in Madrid, as well as little bustard, lesser kestrel and Montagu's harrier.

Nature
A minor stream that crosses the district and links several local paths, included within SPA 139 of cereal steppes; nearby, in the Los Prados area, there is a Bronze Age site next to the El Altillo viewpoint. A right-bank tributary of the Henares, it rises in Torrejón del Rey and flows into the Henares at Alcalá de Henares after passing through Camarma de Esteruelas; reeds, bulrushes, canes and willows grow along its floodplain, home to species such as the great bustard, the harrier and the ocellated lizard. The Romans founded Complutum at the fork formed by its confluence with the Henares, and its rain-fed land is today devoted mainly to cereal farming.

A stretch of the great drovers' road that linked the northern mountain pastures with the dehesas of the south-west of the peninsula, preserved as an earth corridor between cereal fields and walked and cycled today by locals and visitors alike.
