What to see and do in Moralzarzal

Moralzarzal
Village
Moralzarzal is a Madrid municipality of about 14,800 inhabitants, situated at 979 metres of altitude in the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the point where the waters of the Guadarrama and Manzanares basins divide. Its name arises from the medieval union, in the mid-14th century, of the neighbouring villages of Fuente del Moral and Zarzal, and the municipality became independent in 1636. The municipal area, surrounded by peaks such as Peña Albú (1,302 m) or El Estepar (1,402 m), was known for generations for its springs of arsenical, ferruginous and nitrogenous waters, which attracted the first visitors before the phenomenon of second homes arrived. It preserves a 16th- and 17th-century church and a clock tower donated by the bullfighter Frascuelo in 1886.
Cabeza Mediana hill
Nature
An isolated hill at the foot of the southern slope of the sierra de Guadarrama, to which it belongs geologically although separated from it by a plain; its municipal area is shared between Alpedrete, Moralzarzal and Collado Mediano. It reaches 1,331 metres in altitude and is crowned by an old optical telegraph tower, which has also earned it the names cerro del Telégrafo or cerro del Cañal, although other heights in the range, such as the one at the Puerto de Navacerrada or the one at Rascafría, share one or another of these same names without being the same place.
