What to see and do in Collado Mediano

Collado Mediano
Village
Collado Mediano is a village of about 7,700 inhabitants at 1,032 metres above sea level, deep in the sierra de Guadarrama, formed at the pass shaped by the cerro del Castillo, Monterredondo and the Chaparral; it stretches mostly along the calle Real. Two kilometres from the town centre a Roman inn was excavated, identified with the mansio of Miaccum. The village did not gain town status until 1630, when Ana de Mendoza y Enríquez de Cabrera granted it a town charter and separated it from Manzanares el Real; until then it had been under the influence of Segovia. It suffered harshly in the civil war for lying between the two fronts, and since the 1950s it has lived off mountain summer tourism, favoured by its good rail links with Madrid.
Roman site of El Beneficio
Nature
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2012, it preserves a mansio of the 2nd to 5th centuries with a common room, kitchen and baths heated by an outside furnace; it is identified with the Miaccum cited on road XXIV of the Antonine Itinerary.
Varela House
Curiosity
A house of 115 square metres that Alejandro de la Sota built between 1964 and 1968 on a commission from José Varela as a prototype of prefabricated panels of prestressed, washed concrete; it is the only work from that experimental series ever built.
The Roman mansio of El Beneficio
Historical milestone
The site of El Beneficio preserves a Roman mansio, the inn of the road that crossed the sierra by the Fuenfría pass on the way to Segovia. It is the only one excavated and documented in direct association with a road and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2012.
