What to see and do in Collado Villalba

Collado Villalba
Village
Collado Villalba, with about 67,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the Madrid mountains and the capital of the Cuenca del Guadarrama comarca, in whose broad valley it sits, at 917 metres above sea level and surrounded on every side but the south by mountains over 1,700 metres, such as La Maliciosa, Siete Picos or La Peñota. The climate is continentalised Mediterranean, with hot, stormy summers and cold winters with moderate snowfall. Its growth came with the arrival of the Ferrocarril de Madrid a Hendaya in 1861: at its station the line forks towards Segovia and towards Ávila, which turned the town into a communications hub of the sierra.
Dehesa Boyal of Collado Villalba
Nature
Ash grove of communal pasture with roots documented in the late 13th century and some 78 hectares, of which 58 are still used for livestock; an accessible 3.2-kilometre circular route with fourteen panels runs around its perimeter.
Church of Nuestra Señora del Enebral
Monument
A rural Renaissance church of the 16th and 17th centuries built entirely in granite, in the building manner typical of the Sierra de Guadarrama; it is the main piece of religious heritage in the old centre of Collado Villalba.
The station that created Collado Villalba
Historical milestone
The opening in 1861 of the Madrid-El Escorial stretch gave the municipality its own station, turned into a railway junction when the Segovia line was added. Around the platforms grew a second urban center that ended up outgrowing the old village.
