What to see and do in Quijorna

Quijorna
Village
Quijorna is a village of about 4,000 inhabitants at 588 metres of altitude, in the west of the Community of Madrid, within the comarca of the Guadarrama Basin, about 39 kilometres from the capital. Almost half of its territory is protected as a special protection area for birds. In the mid-19th century it had barely 147 inhabitants, but the village paid a high price in the civil war: between 6 and 25 July 1937 it was the scene of the Battle of Brunete, an offensive by the Republican army to relieve the pressure on Madrid, and the bombings razed it completely, with only part of the church being saved. In 2013 the town council organised an exhibition about those events.
Lime kilns of Quijorna
Curiosity
The municipal district came to have some five hundred lime kilns, and the loaded carts set out from here for the works on the monastery of El Escorial; the activity shaped the municipality's landscape and economy for centuries.
