What to see and do in Villaviciosa de Odón

Villaviciosa de Odón
Village
Villaviciosa de Odón is a town in the west of the Madrid metropolitan area, with around 30,000 inhabitants, located at 661 meters above sea level in the middle basin of the Guadarrama River. On its lands stood the ancient Calatalifa, from the Arabic Qal'at al-Jalifa or Castle of the Caliph, already recorded in the year 939, which disappeared at the end of the 13th century after the Reconquest. The settlement was reborn in the mid-15th century under the name Odón, refounded by settlers from Segovia, until in 1480 Isabella the Catholic granted these lands to the Cabrera-Bobadilla couple. Its castle, from the 15th century and remodeled by Juan de Herrera in 1583, held Godoy prisoner after the Aranjuez mutiny and has housed the Historical Archive of the Air Force since 1972. Its mountain was a Royal Forest in the 18th century.
Castle of Villaviciosa de Odón
Monument
Fortress built in the late 15th century by the Marquises of Moya, razed in the Comunero revolt of 1521 and rebuilt in 1583 with the involvement of Juan de Herrera; Ferdinand VI spent his last years there and died there in 1759.
Historical Archive of the Air Force
Curiosity
The Historical Archive of the Air Force, created by Decree 2396/1972 of 18 August under the double designation General and Historical, is one of the eight National Archives of the Defence Archival System and holds the historical documentation of the Air Force that is twenty years old or more. Since 1972 it has occupied the castle of Villaviciosa de Odón, built in 1496 by the Marquises of Moya, destroyed by the comuneros in 1520 and rebuilt shortly afterwards, which had previously housed Spain's first School of Forestry Engineers, between 1848 and 1870, and a school for carabineros from 1886. Its holdings are organised into divisions devoted to Military Aeronautics, the Civil War, the Ministry of the Air, the air regions, personnel, justice and private archives.
Spring of los Tres Caños de Villaviciosa
Monument
A monumental granite fountain attributed to Ventura Rodríguez, chief architect of the town of Madrid from 1764; it supplied the neighbourhood with water for generations and still presides over one of the central spaces of the old town of Villaviciosa.
The death of Ferdinand VI
Historical milestone
The king withdrew to the municipality's castle on the same day his wife Bárbara de Braganza died, and there he spent a year of prostration known as the "year without a king". He died in 1759 without issue and was succeeded by his brother Charles III.
