Pozuelo de Alarcón
Village
Pozuelo de Alarcón is a municipality in the metropolitan area of Madrid, west and slightly north of the capital, 13 kilometers away by road. Its origins go back to the Reconquest, and until the mid-19th century it lived mainly by supplying Madrid with agricultural and livestock goods and from the tanning industry; since then it has attracted summer residents and well-off Madrid families, and since the 1960s it has received new waves of population, being today the municipality with the highest per capita income in Spain, with around 89,000 inhabitants. It takes its surname from Gabriel de Ocaña y Alarcón, who bought the town in 1633; it remained on the front line and was evacuated during the Civil War, when the municipality was left devastated, and its train station has operated since 1861.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Pozuelo
Monument
The parish church built in the mid-16th century, with work by Diego de Urbina and Francisco Giralte, was destroyed when the Madrid front line passed through the village; the present church was rebuilt in the 1940s.
