What to see and do in Boadilla del Monte

Boadilla del Monte
Village
A town of some 66,000 inhabitants whose palace of the Infante Don Luis, remodelled by Ventura Rodríguez in the 18th century, and the convent of La Encarnación of 1674 recall its seigneurial past; the parish church of San Cristóbal preserves Mudéjar features.
Palace of el Infante don Luis
Monument
The Palace of Infante Don Luis stands in the town centre of Boadilla del Monte, in the west of the Community of Madrid. It was built between 1763 and 1765 by Ventura Rodríguez for Luis Antonio de Borbón y Farnesio, the youngest son of Philip V and brother of Charles III, lord of Boadilla from 1761. It was his main residence until 1776, when the infante moved to Arenas de San Pedro following his marriage to María Teresa de Vallabriga; among his guests was the musician Luigi Boccherini. It later passed to the Dukes of Sueca, suffered the looting of its art collection during the Civil War and served as barracks, hospital and boarding school. Declared a National Monument in 1974 and expropriated in 1998, it is today municipal property, with gardens of more than seven hectares.
Convent of la Encarnación de Boadilla
Monument
The convent of la Encarnación was built in 1674 to house a community of Discalced Carmelites, on the initiative of María de Vera y Gasca; the complex brings together, besides the church, the Chaplains' house and the guesthouse. The order remained there until the 1970s. In 1974 it was declared a Historic Ensemble together with the neighbouring Palace of Infante Don Luis, and in 1998 it was restored and turned into a hotel. The church, with a Latin-cross plan and a hemispherical dome over the crossing, has an austere brick façade in the sober Madrid Baroque style, preceded by the atrium typical of seventeenth-century Carmelite churches. Built on the plaza del Rosario, it is one of the oldest buildings the town retains, a witness to the Boadilla that existed before the arrival of Infante Don Luis in the eighteenth century.
Mount of Boadilla
Nature
Holm oak wood with ash groves and replanted pines covering some 827 hectares and catalogued as protected woodland; it is spread over areas such as Vallelargo, La Atalaya and the floodplain of the Fresneda stream and hosts a notable density of birds of prey.
