What to see and do in Vila-seca

Vila-seca
Village
Vila-seca is a coastal municipality in the comarca of Tarragonès adjoining Salou, with 23,917 inhabitants and a notable old town. Until the 1980s it kept the name Vilaseca i Salou, until the latter separated in 1989; the municipality also includes the settlements of La Pineda, on the coast, and La Plana, and part of the PortAventura World complex lies within its territory. Already settled in Roman times, it received its lands in 1162, after the reconquest, when Alfonso II of Aragon granted them to Ramón de Olzina; during the Middle Ages two settlements coexisted, unified in 1525 under the archbishop of Tarragona. The municipality actively defended its rights over the port of Salou, which suffered attacks by Barbary pirates.
Church of Vila-seca
Monument
Church of Sant Esteve de Vila-seca, in a style transitional between Gothic and Renaissance, with a single nave and a rectangular-plan bell tower built in 1605; the Capella Fonda was added around 1880.
Vila-seca Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Vila-seca, dedicated to San Esteban Protomártir, is celebrated on 3 August; during the 18th and 19th centuries the Baile de San Esteban (Dance of Saint Stephen) was performed, a tradition revived in 2018.
Beaches of Vila-seca
Nature
Coastal strip of Vila-seca, in the Tarragonès, formed by the Racó beach and the Prats beach, which together total 3,510 metres of sand before entering the territory of Tarragona, and by the resort development of la Pineda. Tourism sustains the economy of la Pineda, with a wide range of hotels; from 1987 onwards beach regeneration projects were undertaken, and in those years the Aquópolis water park was set up, and, already in the 1990s, Port Aventura, which boosted the coastline as a tourist destination.
Brandy of the Camp de Tarragona
Food and drink
The distillation of wine brandy was the great business of the comarca in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: it was shipped through Salou bound for northern Europe and for America. From that industry come the mistelas and the rancio wines that are still made.
