Castle of Montornès Monument · la Pobla de Montornès, Tarragonès, Tarragona Image of la Pobla de Montornès, not of the place itself. The remains, atop a hill one kilometer from the village, correspond to a fortress whose construction was ordered in 1066, when Count Ramon Berenguer I and his wife Almodis ceded the Puigperdiguers to Ramon Transunyer; by 1099 the castle was already built, and from 1173 it passed into the hands of the monastery of Santes Creus. It declined from the 15th century and was abandoned and destroyed during the 19th-century Carlist Wars. An almost square walled precinct survives, about 30 meters per side, along with a solid, consolidated structure in the southwest corner.
