Castle of Banyeres Monument · Banyeres del Penedès, Baix Penedès, Tarragona The castle of Banyeres del Penedès (Baix Penedès, Tarragona), known as la Guàrdia de Banyeres, is a Romanesque tower atop a hill, today partly in ruins: cylindrical in plan and built of masonry of irregular stones, it retains less than half of its original twelve metres in height. It is documented since the year 938 among the possessions of Louis d'Outremer, and in 988 King Lothair assigned it to the monastery of Sant Cugat; in 1032 Bishop Guadall granted it in fief to Mir Llop Sanç, whose family extended its domains across the comarca. In 1371 it passed into royal ownership. Remains of Muslim pottery have been found at the site, and the complex is a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
