Els Ports (Baix Ebre Slope) Nature · Alfara de Carles, Baix Ebre, Tarragona Image of Alfara de Carles, not of the place itself. The eastern slope of the Ports massif within the municipalities of Alfara de Carles and Paüls (Baix Ebre, Tarragona), the easternmost end of the Iberian System, covering more than 800 km² divided between Catalonia, Aragon and the Valencian Community. Its highest peak, Mont Caro, at 1,441 metres, is also the highest point in the province of Tarragona; it is followed by Tossal d'En Canader, at 1,393 metres. Vegetation varies with altitude: scrubland and Aleppo pine woods up to 600 metres, black pine and Scots pine woods between 500 and 1,400 metres, and beech woods and mixed forests at the highest elevations. Since 2001, under Decree 160/2001, a large part of this area, 35,050 hectares in total, forms the Ports Natural Park. Photo: Xavier Vázquez (Public domain) What to see and do in Alfara de Carles
