What to see and do in Querol

Querol
Village
Querol is a mountain municipality in the comarca of Alt Camp, in the province of Tarragona, on the boundary with the comarques of Conca de Barberà, Alt Penedès and Anoia, between the spurs of the Sierra de Brufaganya and the Ancosa plain. It has 611 inhabitants. The village stands on a hillock at an altitude of 565 metres, overlooking the left bank of the river Gaià, presided over by the ruins of the imposing castle of Querol. In the upper part stands the parish church of Santa Maria, with a single nave with a pointed vault, a polygonal apse and a square bell tower. The territory also includes the settlement of Esblada and the old castles of Saburella and Pinyana, which complete the four castles in the municipality that each headed their own feudal district.
Church of Sant Jaume de Montagut
Monument
Church of Sant Jaume de Montagut, in the municipality of Querol, in the Tarragona comarca of Alt Camp. It is one of the singular examples of 14th-century Catalan Gothic religious architecture for the typology of its plan and its structural solutions: with a single nave of two bays, it closes in a seven-sided polygonal apse formed by as many chapels covered with ribbed vaults, with large buttresses on the north façade and two bell-gable towers, and a portal of three semicircular arches on the south side. It was declared a cultural asset of national interest in July 2013, a declaration that also protects the surroundings of the monument and its subsoil owing to the possible existence of archaeological remains.
Castle of Pinyana
Monument
The castle of Pinyana stands on a hill beside the road that links Pont d'Armentera with Querol, near the Gaià river. Part of its walls survive, along with a circular tower and the remains of the chapel of Santa Maria de Pinyana, rectangular in plan and covered with a barrel vault. Documented since the year 986, it formed part of the domains of Hug de Cervelló along with the castles of Montagut and Querol, and in 1023 it was among the assets that Countess Ermessenda pledged to her son Berenguer Ramon I. It later passed to Guerau Alemany de Cervelló and in 1269 was ceded to the monastery of Santes Creus, which continued collecting its tithes until 1480; by 1565 it already belonged to Pont d'Armentera.
Castle of Querol
Monument
Castle on a crag near the valley of the Gaià river, in the municipality of Querol (Alt Camp, Tarragona), at 575 metres above sea level. Romanesque in style with late Gothic elements, it preserves a circular tower some 4 metres high, with walls 80 to 120 centimetres thick, and a rectangular enclosure of about 35 by 20 metres with two chambers with pointed arches and vaults. Its walls show three phases: a base of irregular ashlars, a Romanesque band with arrow slits, and an upper section with larger openings and battlements. Occupied in the 10th century by Ansulf de Gurb, it passed between 1018 and 1112 to the Cervelló family, feudal vassals of the counts of Barcelona; between 1528 and 1597 it came by marriage to the Sayol family. Destroyed in 1835 during the First Carlist War. A cultural asset of national interest.
Castle of Montagut
Monument
The castle of Montagut, a border castle of which barely more than ruins remain atop the Montagut hill, is reached by a paved track from Querol. It is documented since the year 990, when Sendred de Gurb donated to Sant Cugat the allodial lands he held within the boundaries of the castles of Montagut, Querol and Pinyana; in 996 Sendred himself and his wife Matresinda sold the castle, together with those of Querol and Pinyana, to Hug, Sendred's brother. From the mid-12th century onward, the Montagut family is documented as castellans, dependent on the Cervelló, in whose hands the castle remained throughout the Middle Ages.
Castle of Saburella
Monument
The castle of Saburella stands on a hill 683 m high, on the right bank of the Gaià river, in the municipality of Querol; it postdates the Reconquest and is fairly well preserved, especially one of its three semicircular towers, almost intact, and part of the wall. It is distinguished from the nearby rocky castle of Selmella, with which it was involved in conflicts between the monastery of Santes Creus and the Cervelló, lords of both. The first documentary reference is from 1229, in the will of Ramon Alemany de Cervelló, who ordered a chapel to be built there in honour of Sant Miquel; the castle remained in the hands of the Cervelló, as confirmed by a 1380 record in which King Peter the Ceremonious demands its restitution to the lineage after it had been occupied by the crown.
Querol Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Querol is celebrated in August (in 2024, from the 10th to the 15th), with a mass on 15 August in honor of Santa Maria de Querol, a float parade, a communal barbecue and open-air dances.
