Castle of Pinyana Monument · Querol, Alt Camp, Tarragona The castle of Pinyana stands on a hill beside the road that links Pont d'Armentera with Querol, near the Gaià river. Part of its walls survive, along with a circular tower and the remains of the chapel of Santa Maria de Pinyana, rectangular in plan and covered with a barrel vault. Documented since the year 986, it formed part of the domains of Hug de Cervelló along with the castles of Montagut and Querol, and in 1023 it was among the assets that Countess Ermessenda pledged to her son Berenguer Ramon I. It later passed to Guerau Alemany de Cervelló and in 1269 was ceded to the monastery of Santes Creus, which continued collecting its tithes until 1480; by 1565 it already belonged to Pont d'Armentera.
