Castle of Saburella Monument · Querol, Alt Camp, Tarragona The castle of Saburella stands on a hill 683 m high, on the right bank of the Gaià river, in the municipality of Querol; it postdates the Reconquest and is fairly well preserved, especially one of its three semicircular towers, almost intact, and part of the wall. It is distinguished from the nearby rocky castle of Selmella, with which it was involved in conflicts between the monastery of Santes Creus and the Cervelló, lords of both. The first documentary reference is from 1229, in the will of Ramon Alemany de Cervelló, who ordered a chapel to be built there in honour of Sant Miquel; the castle remained in the hands of the Cervelló, as confirmed by a 1380 record in which King Peter the Ceremonious demands its restitution to the lineage after it had been occupied by the crown.
