What to see and do in Vilanova de la Barca

Vilanova de la Barca
Village
Vilanova de la Barca is a municipality of the Segrià market-garden belt, in the province of Lleida, with 1,163 inhabitants, situated at the confluence of the rivers Corb and Segre. Its origin goes back to a fortified castle from the 3rd century, on the nearby Puig de Castell-Pagès, which the count of Barcelona handed over to Berenguer de Grañana after the reconquest of Lleida; he resettled the place and founded the present-day village, later controlled by the Templars. In 1212 the preceptor of Gardeny and Corbins granted a carta franca to build the 'Vila nova'; 'de la Barca' recalls the boat that allowed the Segre to be crossed as a free passage. The municipality remained on the front line between 1938 and 1939, and of its Romanesque church of Santa Maria only the apse survived, later used as a municipal warehouse.
