Alcoletge
Village
Alcoletge is a municipality in the Lleida market-garden area, in the Segrià comarca, with 3,640 inhabitants, on the left bank of the river Segre. Its name comes from the Arabic al-qulaia, "the little castle": it appears mentioned in a document from 1118, when Count Ramón Berenguer III received the castle from the Almoravid Ibn Hilal. The castle was destroyed during the war dels Segadors and suffered a second disaster in the War of the Spanish Succession of 1707. The parish church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel, built around 1765, is a baroque building with three naves and a dome over the crossing, and at the Tossal dels Morts remains of a medieval tower are preserved alongside trenches from the Civil War. Its economy remains linked to irrigated agriculture, above all pears and apples.
