What to see and do in Farrera

Farrera
Village
Farrera is a small mountain municipality in the Pallars Sobirà district, located in the northeast, on the border with Alt Urgell. Its territory comprises the Coma de Burg, the valley of the Riu de Glorieta, with all the headwaters and ravines feeding it down to its middle course, as well as the valley of the Barranc de Cabrils. It is one of the few municipalities in the district that has always kept the same structure, with no mergers or splits. The municipal seat is the village of Burg, where the town hall is located. The municipality also includes the sanctuary of Santa Magdalena de Ribalera, which gives its name to the river of the same name and to the Vall de la Ribalera.
Church of Farrera
Monument
The church of Farrera is a Romanesque temple located at the western edge of the village, in the comarca of Pallars Sobirà. Originally dedicated to Santa Eulàlia, it appears as the parish of the Vall de Tírvia in the consecration act of the Seu d'Urgell and was visited by delegates of the archbishop of Tarragona in 1314; according to the tithe record (dècima) of 1391 its chaplain paid 15 sueldos, and in the early 16th century Pere Blates was rector. The pastoral visits of 1575 and 1758 noted no structural problems; in the latter it had as suffragan churches those of Alendó and Sant Martí de Mallolís, as would later be recorded, in the 19th century, by Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary. For unknown reasons, the temple is today called the church of Sant Roc instead of Santa Eulàlia, and it depends on the parish of Llavorsí. It has a single nave with side chapels and a semicircular apse.

The depopulation of the valleys
Historical milestone
The comarca reached its demographic maximum in 1860 with 20,348 inhabitants and fell to 5,247 in 1981. Emigration emptied entire villages of the valleys of Cardós, Ferrera and Àssua before tourism halted the haemorrhage.
