What to see and do in Sort

Sort
Village
Sort is the capital of the Pallars Sobirà comarca, in the province of Lleida, known worldwide for the la Bruixa d'Or lottery agency, and situated on the banks of the Noguera Pallaresa river, at 692 m above sea level. It was the capital of the former county of Pallars, whose counts had their residence here at Sort castle; its coat of arms recalls that past with the two-headed eagle and the golden sheaves of the county. The municipal area extends northward to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, with peaks close to 3,000 m and lakes of glacial origin. The name Sort may come from a pre-Roman root related to the Basque zubiurruti, bridge, referring to the single bridge that crossed the Noguera Pallaresa. It has 2,236 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Sort
Monument
Castle begun in the 11th century, with Romanesque work from the 11th-12th centuries on the east wall and a 14th-15th-century Gothic palace; it preserves a semicircular keep and the façade of the Gothic palace with a decorated portal and windows. Linked to the counts of Pallars since the 10th century, it passed to the crown after a conflict in 1280; the count of Cardona transformed it into a palace in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it later served as a prison, and it was abandoned in the 17th century after a fire. The duke of Medinaceli ceded it to the municipality in 1842 for use as a cemetery; it has been under archaeological restoration since 1992.
Sort Main Festival
Activity
Festa Major of the capital of the Pallars Sobirà, with fairs of craft products and popular theatre. It is held on 1 August, the date marked as festa major in the municipality's festive calendar.
La Bruixa d'Or
Curiosity
La Bruixa d'Or is a lottery agency located in Sort, capital of the Pallars Sobirà, founded in 1986 by Xavier Gabriel under other initial names such as Stop or Estel. It is the one with the highest volume of lottery sales in all of Spain, a fame it owes in part to the play on words with the town's name, since sort means luck in Catalan. Since 1994 it has handed out more than thirty major prizes, including three Gordos of the Christmas Lottery and two first prizes of the El Niño draw, and it was a pioneer in selling lottery tickets over the internet. It is customary among buyers to rub their tickets on their nose or on the witch's broom located at the entrance of the shop. In 2013 it set a Guinness record by gathering 1,700 people dressed as witches in front of the establishment.
Marquisate of Pallars
Historical milestone
In 1488 the count of Cardona became lord of Sort after paying 12,000 sueldos and in 1491 he received the title of marquis of Pallars. The comarca was thus unified under a noble house dependent on the Crown.
First mention of Sort
Historical milestone
Sort is documented in 947 in a donation of Count Isarn I. In the thirteenth century the castle of the villa became the preferred residence of the counts of Pallars, which fixed its role as capital of the valley.
The smugglers-guides and the Freedom Trail
Historical milestone
During the Second World War thousands of people crossed the passes of the Pallars fleeing occupied Europe; many were interned in the prison of Sort. The building has housed the Camí de la Llibertat museum since 2007.
