The depopulation of the valleys

The comarca reached its demographic maximum in 1860 with 20,348 inhabitants and fell to 5,247 in 1981. Emigration emptied entire villages of the valleys of Cardós, Ferrera and Àssua before tourism halted the haemorrhage.
