What to see and do in Sant Esteve de la Sarga

Sant Esteve de la Sarga
Village
Sant Esteve de la Sarga is a municipality in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, in the province of Lleida, with 121 inhabitants spread across several localities, among them Moror, with its vila closa, Alsamora, Beniure, Estorm and Castellnou de Montsec. The territory, of 92 km², occupies the south-western end of the comarca, with the Noguera Ribagorçana as its boundary to the west and the Montsec d'Ares to the south. Its name refers to the sarga, a willow-family shrub very abundant in the area, a word of Ibero-Basque root already documented in the 10th century as the name of a parish. Dry farming, with cereals, olive trees and almond trees, sustains the economy of a sparsely populated municipality far from the main communication routes.
The Tower of Alsamora
Monument
A circular tower atop the village of Alsamora, within Sant Esteve de la Sarga, the only visible remnant of the castle of Alsamora; clearly medieval in origin, probably from the 11th century, it is not documented until the 18th century, although the territory is already mentioned in 1038. It formed part of a defensive line north of the Montsec together with other towers such as those of Viacamp, Girbeta or Castellnou de Montsec. About thirty metres high, ten metres in outer diameter and 3.25 m in wall thickness, it is the second-tallest tower in Catalonia and one of the best preserved; the interior is divided into four floors, the first covered by a false stone dome 3.2 metres across, and the upper floors, reached through a door facing north, retain double-splayed arrow slits.
Tower of Estorm
Monument
A circular tower from the 11th century, partly in ruins, crowning the walled village of Estorm, in the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga, and part of the defensive line of the northern slope of the Montsec d'Ares. It still stands 12 metres high, with an outer diameter of 4.8 metres and walls 140 centimetres thick; the door opened at about five metres above the ground, and it probably had two more floors. To the south a small walled enclosure survives, which occupied the rest of the summit, with an 80-centimetre wall, and to the northwest an artificial ditch that made access difficult for the enemy. In 1099 Count Pere Ramon I of Pallars Jussà granted the district of Estorm to the canonica of Mur; from the late 17th century until the early 19th it belonged to the Portolà, barons of Castellnou de Montsec.
Walled Village of Moror
Monument
The walled village (vila closa) of Moror rises on a rocky outcrop at one of the most commanding points of the Sant Esteve valley, in the area known as l'Obaga del Montsec, within the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga, in Pallars Jussà. It has been documented since 1092 as castrum Moror and in 1099 was given by Count Pere Ramon I of Pallars Jussà to the canonica of Mur. The settlement had an almost square layout about 45 metres on a side, enclosed and with a single access, owing to its position on the rock. Next to the church, on the north side, remains survive of a tower, of the wall and of a corner tower; the original stretch of wall, about 21 metres long, is made up of ashlar blocks in horizontal courses, about 6 metres high. The structures are dated to around the 11th century.
Sant Esteve de la Sarga Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Sant Esteve de la Sarga is celebrated in a municipality with two 11th-century circular towers: the Torre d'Estorm, which Count Pere Ramon I of the Pallars Jussà endowed to the canonry of Mur in 1099, and the Torre d'Alsamora, about thirty meters tall, one of the best preserved in Catalonia.
