Castle of Tarrés Monument · Tarrés, Garrigues, Lleida The castle of Tarrés, in the Lleida comarca of les Garrigues, is an asset of national cultural interest of which nothing remains standing today: on its site, on a rock that may have served as the base of the fortress, stands an old electrical transformer, and to the west one can make out the moat that separated the fortification's spur from the rest of the hill. Ramon Berenguer IV granted the territory to Ramon de Boixadors and his wife Ermessenda on 26 July 1149 on condition of building a fortress there and repopulating the area; the first document mentioning the castle dates from 1226. In 1245, in the mid-13th century, it passed into the hands of the monastery of Poblet, on which it depended until the 19th century. Photo: Aniol (CC0) What to see and do in Tarrés
