What to see and do in Cava

Cava
Village
Cava, in the Alt Urgell (Lleida), is a municipality made up of three settlements: Ansobell, its capital, El Querforadat and Cava, with 38 inhabitants (INE, 2025), at 1,335 metres above sea level. The castle of Cava is documented in 1277 as part of the county of Cerdanya; in the 17th century it changed hands and in 1787 came under the crown of Aragon. It preserves two Romanesque churches, San Martín de Ansobell, from the 12th century, and Sant Cristòfol de Vinyoles, documented since 1085, as well as the remains of the castle of Miralles, on the serra de Can Pubill. Its economy is based on livestock farming. The Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, declared on 15 July 1983, protects 41,342 hectares of pre-Pyrenean ranges between the Berguedà, the Alt Urgell and the Cerdanya, between the 900 metres of the valleys and the 2,648.6 of the Vulturó.
Castle of el Quer
Monument
12th-century Romanesque castle, a termenat castle documented since 1004 and as a fortress since 1109; today very little remains, some ruined wall stretches and a barely visible tower incorporated into a neighboring house. It belonged to the counts of Cerdanya in the 11th century and passed by donation to the Pinós family -among them Galceran de Pinós- and later to the Castre-Pinós family; in the 17th century the counts of Guimerà adopted the title of viscount of Quarforadat in connection with this castle. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castle of Cava
Monument
Castle documented since 1277, on a rise above the village of Cava, at over 1,300 meters of altitude. It was destroyed by the miquelets in 1712, and today only two stretches of wall survive; locally it is also known as "la Cadira del Senyor" (the Lord's Chair). A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Mas de Vinyoles
Monument
The Mas de Vinyoles is a fortified house of Romanesque character, from the 13th century, enlarged and remodelled for defensive purposes at the end of the Middle Ages before becoming a farmhouse. Today it is abandoned but in reasonable condition; it consists of the fortified dwelling proper and the outbuildings typical of a Pyrenean agricultural holding around it, covered with a two-pitched roof. In 1575 it is documented as 'Mas de Carcolze' in marriage settlements of Cal Saurina d'Ansovell. It stands next to the church of Sant Cristòfol de Vinyoles, in the municipality of Cava.
Cava Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Cava is celebrated in a town within the Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró, established on 15 July 1983, which protects 41,342 hectares of pre-Pyrenean mountains between the Berguedà, the Alt Urgell and the Cerdanya.
Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park
Nature
Declared on 15 July 1983, it protects 41,342 hectares of pre-Pyrenean mountain ranges between the Berguedà, the Alt Urgell and the Cerdanya, from 900 metres up to the 2,648 metres of the Vulturó. It is home to some 1,400 plant species and fauna such as the chamois and the capercaillie. It comprises the Cadí range, of limestone rock and rugged relief with a particularly striking north face, and the Moixeró range, which join at the Tancalaporta pass, at 2,357 metres, forming a barrier that separates the Segre valley from the headwaters of the river Llobregat. In its southern part stands the Pedraforca, a mountain of characteristic shape and one of the symbols of Catalan hiking.
