What to see and do in Estamariu

Estamariu
Village
Estamariu is a small rural municipality of 135 inhabitants and 21 square kilometres, situated at 1,084 metres above sea level at the north-eastern end of the comarca of the Alt Urgell, in the province of Lleida. Documented since the year 893 as Stamariz, it was part of the viscounty of Castellbò and its name, of pre-Roman Basque-like root, may mean, according to the philologist Joan Coromines, the sheepfold or the enclosure of the oak. Its parish church, from the 17th century and with a Baroque lunette vault, was originally dedicated to Santa Cecilia and today shares patronage with Sant Vicenç.
Church of Estamariu
Monument
The church of Santa Cecilia de Estamariu (Alt Urgell, Lleida) is the municipality's parish church, in 17th-century Baroque style. It has a rectangular nave covered by a Baroque lunette vault, with a square chancel. It shares the municipality's patronage with San Vicente: the feast of Santa Cecilia is celebrated on 22 November and that of San Vicente on 22 January. This latter date corresponds to the old Romanesque church of San Vicente, located next to the village's old cemetery, beside the road to Bescaran, today in ruins and replaced as the parish church by the present-day church of Santa Cecilia.
