What to see and do in Arsèguel

Arsèguel
Village
Arsèguel is a small municipality in the Alt Urgell, in the upper valley of the river Segre, next to the Cadí mountain range, with 87 inhabitants (2025); it stands at 949 metres above sea level. First mentioned in the deed of consecration of Urgell cathedral, it belonged first to the county of Cerdanya and, from the 14th century, to that of Urgell. Its castle, held by the Cadell family between the 12th and 13th centuries, was a focus of the factional struggles between nyerros and cadells in the late 16th century: it suffered royal attacks in 1588 and was besieged and destroyed in 1592 by order of the lieutenant of Catalonia; today only remains of its walls survive. The parish church, Santa Coloma, is Romanesque, with a single nave. Since 1976 it has hosted in July a gathering of Pyrenean accordionists that led, in 1988, to the founding of the Accordion Museum.

Today only fragments remain: half a tower attached to a house, a large round arch incorporated into a wall on the square, and some elements next to the parish church. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category) (811-MH).
Arsèguel Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Arsèguel is celebrated in a town whose castle, belonging to the Cadell family, was a focal point of the faction feuds of the late 16th century and was besieged by royal troops in 1588 and 1592 until its destruction; since 1976 the town has also hosted the Trobada d'Acordionistes del Pirineu (Pyrenean Accordionists' Gathering) on the last Saturday of July, and it preserves an accordion museum with instruments dating from 1840.
Pyrenees Accordionists' Gathering
Historical milestone
A traditional music festival held in Arsèguel (Alt Urgell) since 1976 at the initiative of the musician Artur Blasco, president of the Associació d'Arsèguel i els Acordionistes del Pirineu; it is the oldest traditional music festival in Catalonia and is considered the most important diatonic accordion festival in Europe, one that revived the repertoire of this instrument native to the Pyrenees. For economic reasons, since the 36th edition, in 2011, some performances have also been moved to la Seu d'Urgell; that year thirteen Catalan groups and twelve international ones took part, from countries such as Quebec, Portugal, France, Moldova and Colombia. The village also keeps an accordion museum with instruments from all over Europe, the oldest dating from 1840, and the event is held on the last Saturday of July.
