Sils
Village
Sils is a municipality of the Selva comarca, in the province of Girona, situated largely on the land of the former Sils lake, drained in the 19th century, at the northern end of the Catalan pre-coastal depression. It has 6,920 inhabitants and its economy combines agriculture, livestock, forestry and a diversified industry. The municipality preserves the church of Santa Eulalia, in the Vallcanera district, and the Salvador Claret car collection, a museum devoted to mobility. Beside the former lake, now a pond, lies the protected wetland of l'Estany de Sils. The municipal area is well connected, crossed by the AP-7 motorway and by the road linking Santa Coloma de Farners with Lloret de Mar.

Nature
The Estany de Sils is a wetland that corresponds to the last remnant of a former natural lake situated in the municipalities of Sils and Maçanet de la Selva (la Selva), which came to be the largest lake in Catalonia, comparable in size to the estany de Banyoles. Over the centuries, especially during the 19th century, it was gradually drained to gain farmland and out of fear of diseases such as malaria; nevertheless, the water reappeared after heavy rains, and the area retained, despite the intense transformation, a notable floral richness and an interesting aquatic fauna. At the start of the 21st century, a LIFE project promoted by the Sils town council recovered an area of lagoons and is working to strengthen the natural habitats through a more respectful management of the surrounding crops.
