Sant Esteve de Massanes Monument · Massanes, Selva, Girona Of the parish church of Sant Esteve, located at the western end of the town centre of Massanes, only the Romanesque 11th-century apse is preserved, built in ashlar and decorated with a frieze of Lombard arcading in series of six, topped by a sawtooth frieze; the rest of the building, with side chapels, sacristy and bell tower, essentially dates from the 17th-century work. In 1740 it was completely rebuilt and the Romanesque walls were covered over; the French army destroyed it during the invasion of 1808 and it was reconstructed after the Civil War, in 1939. The church had already been mentioned in a bull of Pope Lucius III in 1185, and in 1903 it was given to the monastery of Breda. Photo: Araceli Merino (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Massanes
